The Burroughs Welcome Building ‘S’ Addition is an 80,000 SF facility that houses the marketing, public relations and visual design departments of the Burroughs Welcome company. The new addition connects to an existing 120,000 brick building and adds a 3 level parking deck for additional parking requirements. This narrow linear site makes it possible to design the addition to literally function as a screen, masking the existing and projecting a more favorable image to the Durham Freeway.
Glass bridges connect the old and new buildings. The space between the two buildings is designed as a series of formal gardens with the lower section functioning as an exterior street for circulation and work. The south side of the new building forms an edge to the pond with exterior spaces taking advantage of the orientation and views.
